Lent Journal

What is Lent?

Lent is a period of 40 days plus Sundays leading up to Easter Sunday; the day on which Jesus-followers celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.  (The number 40 is a biblical symbol for both journeying and completion.)

It is a time of self-examination or “spiritual house-cleaning”, designed to clear away all that would distract us from the risen Jesus.  During Lent, we focus on the sacrifice Jesus made for us by experiencing our own sacrifice.

Many Jesus-followers intentionally do without something they value during Lent, such as a meal or a day’s worth of meals a week, a favorite activity or food, etc.  Some will take up specific acts of love and service in Jesus’ name.  And many will engage in special times of prayer, focus on the Bible, and daily time of devotion.  This journal is designed to help you on your Lenten journey.

Ash Sunday

Every season of Lent always begins with the service of ashes. For centuries it’s been a special time, 40 days long, for followers of Jesus to take care of some business, spiritual business, that sometimes doesn’t get taken care of the rest of the year. This is a time set aside to pause and look at our lives and get honest with God, see if anything is separating us from God, see where we have let the brokenness of life get us off track.
